Lucas McIver was appointed as Swampfoxes team manager in 2017, after being identified by head coach Matthew Bartleet for his enthusiasm, organisation, and deep rugby knowledge, developed through strong involvement in the U85kg Rugby grade, particularly with Morrinsville U85s. Lucas has been part of the Swamp Foxes’ management group for multiple seasons, providing operational leadership and player support at our provincial level.
Nobody gets to see the work behind the scenes that Lucas does but the logistics to enable an stress-free program is second to none when Lucas is involved. Scott Penney, current Thames Valley CEO said: ” It’s been a privilege to work with Lucas over the past 3 years, the time and effort that he puts into our programs is a driving force behind our success. Lucas has a personality to ask all the questions, think of all of the possibilities and still deliver with the outcomes which is invaluable to any team.”
He was a member of the management team during Thames Valley’s Meads Cup victories, including the historic 2018 win and the 2024 Meads Cup title, playing a behind the scenes role in one of the union’s most successful modern era’s. Milestone Recognition includes in 2023, Lucas celebrated his 50th match in management for Thames Valley, alongside fellow management members, highlighting his longevity and commitment to the team.
David ( Harry) Harrison current Head coach said “Lucas has made a significant contribution to the SwampFoxes over the past eight seasons. His attention to detail and passion for the team have been a real strength, helping to shape an enjoyable and high-performing environment for both players and management. He has played a key role in building the successful team environment we enjoy today, and leaves behind a strong legacy. Lucas was manager during both our Meads Cup victories in 2018 and 2024, and has also been a passionate supporter of our community partnership with Goldfields School. On behalf of Joe and myself I would like to acknowledge the incredible time and effort Lucas has dedicated to every training and game over the years.
We also extend our sincere thanks to his wife Jamie, and sons LJ and Chael, for their unwavering support throughout his journey. Lucas has set a high standard for all who follow.
Lucas is widely described as enthusiastic, dedicated, and proactive, with his contribution often credited as part of the cultural and performance turnaround that saw Thames Valley rise from the bottom of the table to championship success.
We wish him well with what is to come but like Joey we don’t think he will be a stranger to our rugby
