Following last years successful tour by the Thames Valley Under 18’s rugby team to the Lower North Island, the Thames Valley Rugby’s Board of management and staff are in the process of organizing a similar tour in 2017 for the Under 16’s team.
Rugby Development officer Bill Cooksley stated that “last years tour turned out to be a huge success with the team winning 2 out of the 3 games and then going on to be very competitive throughout the following Northern Regions rugby competition. The tour also had the added benefit of most of the players that the coaching team wanted to be involved were involved”
As a result of the TVRFU’s review process, the TVRFU Board of Management saw the benefit of a week long tour and have subsequently budgeted for a tour to take place again in 2017 for not just the Under 18’s team but also the Under 16’s team – so that this group of players can also enjoy the positive experience that these tours provide.
The current plan is to send the Under 18’s to the East Coast of the North Island to play against Poverty Bay and East Coast and the Under 16’s to the Lower North Island for games against Wairarapa Bush, Horowhenua-Kapiti and Wanganui during the winter tournament week. The dates for this are Saturday 2nd September through to Sunday 10th September 2017.
Whilst it is not just secondary school players that are eligible for selection – these tours have the backing of – not only the rugby community – but the majority of the secondary schools which is key to ensuring success all round.
The start of these campaigns begin on Monday 22nd May at 7pm at the Paeroa Domain with a muster for all u18’s players wishing to make themselves available.
