Heartland rugby team to train in Thames
The Thames Valley Heartland team has a training camp in Thames on Saturday as part of the build-up to the opening game of the Mitre 10 Championship,.
The championship begins on August 25 with a home game against West Coast at Boyd Park, Te Aroha.
After a couple of warm-up games against Taranaki and Ngati Porou East Coast the squad will freshen up this week in preparation for the upcoming competition.
Following a very successful team launch at the Thames Rugby Club on Wednesday night, where the team players and management were introduced to sponsors and supporters, media and the public, coach Matthew Bartleet will take the opportunity to work on readying his charges for the weeks ahead.
The development team continues its preseason campaign with a home game at Boyd Park, Te Aroha against the King Country development team.
These teams will meet in competition on September 15, so it will be a good chance for both sides to measure up for that game.
Kick off in Te Aroha is at 2pm.
The Thames Valley Age Grade Rep teams are also in pre-season mode following the naming of the Under 18, Under 16, Roller Mills and Under 45kg teams last week.
The Under 18s are assembling this weekend for an overnight camp at the Whitianga Rugby Club. The two-day camp will give the selectors an opportunity to help finalise a squad for the upcoming season with a trial or scenarios game planned for Sunday morning to assist the process.
The Under 16s are having a training day at the Ngatea Rugby Club on Saturday followed by their first run of the season against Northland Under 15s at Waitakaruru on Sunday. Kick off for this game is 11am.
The Roller Mills and Under 45kg teams are also holding camps in the next few weeks but they have also commenced training this week.
The third round of the Under 13 Girls competition is being held at the Waihi Athletic Rugby Club this Friday night.
This initiative has been well supported by the local community and the number of girls that are new to the game and willing to take part has been most encouraging. Kick off for the first game at Waihi is 6pm.
