Coaches and players should be 100% familiar with these procedures.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">SUSPECTED SPINAL INJURY<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">In the event of a suspected spinal or other serious injury:<\/span><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">GET HELP FIRST, and GET IT FAST<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Call 111 for an Ambulance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Don\u2019t move the player until qualified medical personnel arrive!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">A player may have suffered a severe neck injury, and yet still be able to move. If the spine is unstable, and they are moved, they run the risk of permanent paralysis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Referees and coaches should err on the side of caution and seek medical assistance in the event of any potentially serious injury.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">FOR ALL OTHER INJURIES<\/span><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">If the injury disrupts play, get the player assessed on the field so you can decide whether to keep the player on or take them off. \u00a0If emergency treatment is not needed, here is a tool to help with further assessment.<\/span><\/p>\n<table>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Key word<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Action<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Talk<\/span><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Ask the player what happened.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Where does it hurt?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">What kind of pain is it?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Observe<\/span><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Look at the affected area for redness or swelling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Is the injured side different from the other side?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Touch<\/span><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Feel for lumps, depression, swelling, heat, points of tenderness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Movement<\/span><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Active movement \u2013 Ask the injured player to move the injured part without any help.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Passive movement \u2013 If the player can move the injured part, carefully try to move it yourself through its full range of motion.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Skills Test<\/span><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Did the active and passive movement produce pain? Don\u2019t put any weight on the injured part.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Ice<\/span><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Ice cools the tissue and reduces pain, swelling and bleeding.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Place ice wrapped in a damp towel onto the injured area.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Apply ice for 20 minutes every two hours for the first 48 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Compression<\/span><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Firm bandaging helps to reduce bleeding and swelling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Ensure that bandaging is not so tight that it cuts off circulation or causes tingling or pain past the bandage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Bandage the injury between ice treatments.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Elevation<\/span><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Elevate the injured area to stop bleeding and swelling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Raise the injured area on a pillow for comfort and support.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Diagnosis<\/span><\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Consult a medical professional such as a doctor or physiotherapist especially if you are worried about the injury, or if the pain or swelling gets worse.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">If the pain or swelling has not gone down significantly within 48 hours, also seek treatment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Once the injury has been diagnosed and treated, avoid these harmful factors for 72 hours:<\/span><\/h4>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">HARM<\/span><\/h2>\n<table>\n<thead>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Key word<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><strong>Action<\/strong><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Heat<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Heat increases the bleeding in the injured tissues. Avoid hot baths and showers, saunas, hot water bottles, heat packs and liniments.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Alcohol<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Avoid alcohol as it increases the bleeding and swelling around soft tissue injuries and delays healing. It can also mask the injury\u2019s pain and possible severity, which may result in the player not seeking treatment as early as they should. If a player has a suspected head injury alcohol MUST be avoided.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Running<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Running, or exercise of the injured part, will cause further damage. Do not resume exercise within 72 hours of the injury unless a medical professional clears the player.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Massage<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Massage causes an increase in bleeding and swelling and will prolong the rehabilitation process when done within 72 hours of the injury.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h3><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">FAIR \u2013 First Aid in Rugby<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">First Aid in Rugby (FAIR) Courses give you the opportunity to gain rugby-specific first aid skills. Delivered by experienced practitioners with rugby expertise, a World Rugby recognised FAIR qualification will give you the skills to immediately assist an injured player. The courses are open to anyone in the rugby community \u2013 volunteers, coaches, referees, physios, players, sports coordinators, parents and everyone else interested.
