Swampfoxes head to West Coast for round three of Heartland Championship
It’s round three of the Mitre 10 Heartland Championship and Thames Valley is on the road to play Buller at Victoria Square, Westport, at the earlier start time of 1.30pm.
Fresh off a maiden victory against Wairarapa Bush last week, the Swampfoxes will face one of the competition’s most difficult opponents in Buller.
Last year, Buller lost only two games in the regular season and reached the Meads Cup semi-finals, losing a nail-biter against Horowhenua Kapiti 18-17 in Levin, while in 2016 they went all the way to the Meads Cup final only to lose 20-18 to Wanganui late in the game.
They did slip up in Paeroa last year as Thames Valley handed them a 26-7 defeat but the Swampfoxes have not won in Buller since the inception of the Heartland Competition in 2006.
The Thames Valley team has no major injuries at present but there are several players unavailable for this game because of work commitments.
Coach Matthew Bartleet has named the following team for this game: L Easton, G McIntyre, S Tupou, C Dromgool, C McVerry, B Ranga, C Kelleher, A Bradley, B Bonnar, R Boughton, K Lee, S Hill, S McCahon, H Lafituanai, J Dodunski. Reserves: L Matai-Povey, S Ouchi, M Rolston, M Hart, M Fisher, M Abraham, E Seymour. The referee is Hugh Reed.
The Development Team plays North Harbour Under 85s at Windsor Park, East Coast Bays in a 1pm kick off.
Thames Valley is currently second in this competition with a one win, one loss record but will need to improve on last week’s efforts if they are to do better on Saturday as the hosts will be out to avoid a third straight defeat.
The Under 18s are on tour at present, recording a 21-20 win against Wanganui at Cooks Gardens on Wednesday night. They take on Horowhenua Kapiti at Levin on Saturday at 11.30am.
The Under 16s are also on tour and they recorded their first win of the season on Wednesday when they beat Ngati Porou East Coast 51-27 at the Hatea-a-Rangi Domain, Tokomaru Bay.
They will play Poverty Bay in Gisborne on Saturday at 10.30am before returning home later that day.
The Under 14s will be aiming for three wins in a row when they face Matamata Corinthians at Hinuera Rugby Club in a 12pm kick off while the Under 45kg team travels to Bethlehem College in Tauranga to play Western Bay of Plenty at 11am in week two of the Invitation Tournament.
On Sunday the Thames Valley Roller Mills team has a warm up game against a Counties Manukau Roller Mills Development Team at 12pm at the Maramarua Rugby Club.
