Waihi Athletic win 2016 Thames Valley Club 7’s Championship

Waihi Athletic win 2016 Thames Valley Club 7’s Championship
Champions in 2014, Waihi Athletic returned to Waitakaruru this year to reclaim their 7’s title for the second time. Eight teams entered this year’s event, with Mercury Bay showing the way by putting in A and B teams.

Hosts Hauraki North had a strong run in pool play to come out on top in their section while Mercury Bay A kept up their good form from the previous week to come out on top in the other group. Form went with the favoured sides as they all safely negotiated the quarter finals however the semifinals proved too much for Mercury Bay and Hauraki North as Waihi and Thames went on to the final.

Waihi raced out to an early lead in the final and just stayed in front of Thames, who rallied gallantly but were unable to reel in the eventual winners.
