Coromandel v Cobras
Coromandel made the journey down to the foot of the mountain being Te Aroha. Coromandel was fresh off a win over Hauraki North. Coromandel have proved to be very strong at the start of the match. This saw them take the lead into half time 17-7. Cobras seemed to gain a second wind with tries to most of the forwards pack. Cobras closing out the game with a bonus point to secure the Silcock shield for winners of round 1. Congratulations to the Cobras side for this achievement.
Final Score Cobras 24 – Coromandel 17.
Thames v Tairua
Tairua were looking to upset a derby day for Thames at Rhodes Park. Thames dominated possession early with a quick 15-point lead, however this did not phase Tairua as they proved why they are at the top end of the points table. Tries from Eli Byles, Lance Easton and Marlon Berte saw Tairua claw there way back into the lead with 10 minutes to go. At the 83rd minute Tairua felt heartbreak as a well-placed Crossfield kick found the hands of Ryan Leopold to score in the corner.
Final Score: Thames 25 – Tairua 24
Waihou v Paeroa
Waihou travelled down the road to play an improving Paeroa side. Waihou looking to get back in the winning Colum produced a strong side to take on Paeroa. Impact players Benjamin Bonnar and Sam “2 guns” McMahon lead the Waihou team from the front. Sam scoring two tries allowing them to stretch the lead. Paeroa however are showing strong promise heading into round 2.
Final Score: Waihou 34 – Paeroa 28
Waihi v Mercury Bay
Mercury Bay travelled down to Waihi to take on the 2018 champions. Waihi quickly shot out to a lead with a try from Brad Wilson. Mercury Bay finally got out of the block by repeatedly testing the Waihi defensive line, however, were unsuccessful. This defensive effort saw Waihi lead the visitors 13-0 at halftime. Second half saw the welcome back of Waihi’s second mayor Brett Ranga and BOP Steamers player Kurt Ekland. Waihi then ran in 4 tries to secure a much-needed win.
Final Score: Waihi 37 – Mercury Bay 7.
Hauraki North v Whangamata
Whangamata travelled over the Kopu-Hikuai hill to take on a slow starting Hauraki North side. Whangamata looking to bounce back after a big loss the weekend before. Whangamata got out of the gates quickly by going into half time with a 12-8 lead over the home side. The Blue Bulls then flexed their muscles, by running away with the game with 36 unanswered points.
Final Score: Hauraki North 46 – Whangamata 12
